Local Politics
Democrats did better in Guilford County than they did in many other places. State Senator Kay Hagan whupped seemingly strong challenger Mark McDaniel, and she did it over the pique-driven opposition of a formidable Democratic-leaning PAC. Maybe she's the one to challenge Howard Coble? And maybe she should fire up a weblog. Also, in a display of effective gerrymandering by NC Dems, Brad Miller beat Carolyn Grant in the new 13th Congressional district.
Four races showed that local voters will cross party lines for a clearly superior candidate. Wide margins of victory went to the better choices in elections for sherriff, clerk of court, County commissioner (Thigpen) and district attorney (these winners include one Republican and three Democrats, but the point is that that's beside the point).
