It's The Terrorism, Stupid

Now that Osama is back from the dead, maybe we can come to grips with the fact that 9/11 really did matter. The fallout from the terror attacks put the GOP in power last week, and it continues to dog the economy. Somehow the ongoing effects of the day that changed everything eluded a lot of otherwise smart people, and also pollsters. Now we are going to fight Iraq not because of its proximate link to terror but because of its proxy status for the people who terrorized us--it's a convenient enemy and unseating Saddam is meant to send a message to our real antagonists--or at least to the governments that might aid them. Maybe we should attack the actual problem instead. With the Bearded Menace returning to the airwaves, at least people will remember how we got into this funk to begin with.

Cast Away

Sydney just walked into my office. For the first time in five weeks, she does not have a cast on her left arm. How does it feel? "Weird, tired, and weak. I can go horseback riding in two weeks."

Edwards Talks Tough

Slate's William Saletan has some good things to say about John Edwards. Of course, the last time I quoted Saletan he was talking about how formidable Walter Mondale looked in the race to succeed Paul Wellstone. Edwards is pitching himself as a fiscally responsible Democrat, and hasn't been afraid to criticize the Bush adminstration.

Lunch Break

If you work in downtown Greensboro, or you can get to downtown Greensboro, you need to go to Le Petit Market at 213 S. Elm St. Luna and I walked there today from my office. The special grilled beef tenderloin sandwich on Wednesdays is phenomenal. Le Petit is owned by sisters Nancy Pierron and Susan Lipper, who have written a cookbook that I can't find online.
