Is it just me, or is blogging similiar to crack, without all the highs?. . .

Ok I still think Sen. Rangel's draft bill is a big ol' crock of political bullshit but he does have one point and that is that in today's military, minorities are greatly over-represented when compared with the population as a whole. I looked up some numbers here and this is what I got: Minority representation in the 4 divisions of the Military, Army: 44, Navy: 38, Marines: 34, Air Force: 28. Now I couldn't find anything that I would consider as good data on the US Census website but from what I can tell, Blacks and Hispanics make up 12.5 percent each of the population (If you know why the Census Bureau splits Hispanics out from the rest of the race calculations, let me know), Asians make up about 3.5 percent, and the rest come in at under 1 percent.

This gives us a grand total (found in 15 minutes of research so don't take these numbers as complete gospel, but I'm a fiend with Google) of 28 percent and change of the American public as minorities. Well below the four divisions of the military.

But I'm not sure this is the real issue. If this was the real issue, why didn't Rangel raise this issue, oh say, 16 TERMS AGO, which is how long he's been serving. View The Distinguished Gentleman from New York's website here. A quick search for Gulf War didn't net much and he didn't seem to be instituting the draft back then.

The real issue here is politics, plain and simple. Rangel, a Democrat, is playing politics and let me be frank (and you be Dean), I find it sickening. This is a very overt attempt to make Bush look like an ass. And don't think for a minute I'm a fan of Bush. I think he's a moron and if I could come up with a strategery to get him un-elected and sent to Canadia, I would. But if nothing else (and I think his economic and domestic policy sucks, rich get richer, no more dividend tax indeed--Read this for good spin fun on his no more dividend shit), I believe that his foreign policy has been consistent and mostly good for America. And I believe kicking Saddam's ass is a good idea for America. If you have issues about kicking Saddam's ass but not Kim Jong-il's ass, read this for reasons why we're treating the two nations differently.

Ok wow, this turned into more of an essay than I expected. . .

UPDATE: One last thought, I'd be happy to go out and fight for my country, I truly believe this is the best country on earth and if I had to die to protect other people's freedoms, I would.  I choose not to because there are other things I'd rather do, but I wouldn't run from it if I was called.  The problem is that I don't believe that the draft will ever be militarily necessary again because I don't think, at least not in the next 100 years, that we're going to fight a war where we need to send hundreds of thousands of our youth to fight oppression.  Our techological advancements and our special operations preparedness protects us from this.  Which is only one more reason why it's obvious that Rangel is playing politics.

I've got to work on being more subtle. . .

Einstein Was Right on Gravity's Velocity.  I wanted to be a physicist for approximately two semesters until I discovered two things: 1. I was going to have to study and more importantly, 2. I was going to have to get smarter.  But I have a layman's grasp of what physics is and does and I love to read articles like this.  Short, sweet, and to the point.  Now if I can just work through quantum mechanics, I'm in business. . .

In case you hadn't noticed, the NY Times is, IMHO, the greatest English paper on the planet and it's great that you can get it free online.  Even better that you don't have to sign up, but can use my username and password.  Heh.
