VHeadline: "The US$ is the 'official' currency of OPEC. If you are a nation who needs OPEC oil, those purchases are priced/denominated in dollars. You are forced to pay in dollars, or in your currency's spot dollar valuation at the closing. Think of this as a US$ monopoly within the OPEC oil cartel - hence, more and more dollars accumulate in the oil producing nations' treasuries.
In November 2000, Saddam Hussein broke that US$ monopoly by denominating Iraqi oil pricing/sales in Euros. Saddam was even lobbying other OPEC members to do likewise.
While this made the French, the Germans and other members of the European Union very happy; it made Washington D.C. most unhappy. The implications to the dollar as the world's reserve currency, the US deficits (both trade and capital), the outstanding debt and its essential foreign rollovers and the US stock markets were tremendous - and all implications were negative!"
This blog has been pointing this out for some time now: the war is a matter of oil and dollar hegemony. That is why also Blair vehemently sticks to his guns.
See also here and here.
How long will this giant on clay feet (the dollar) keep standing? We know the captains of industry and banking have no conscience. When it comes, the crash will be felt all over, from New York to Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Houston, London, Frankfurt...
And it is sure to come... The moral and legal backing of the West is gone, it now rests only on money and guns.
In a couple of hundred years there will surely be a historian, like Edward Gibbon did for the Roman Empire, to pinpoint the crux of the decline and fall of the Western Empire to the year 2000 (actually 2001, when usurper George W. Bush took over the world like a new Nero).

CommonDreams: "As Ralph Nader campaigns in swing state after swing state, a large group of prominent endorsers from Nader 2000 is calling for support for Kerry in those states in order to oust Bush.
Signers of the statement include Noam Chomsky, Ben Cohen, Phil Donahue, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jim Hightower, Bonnie Raitt, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Cornel West and Howard Zinn."

Watch this video with interviews with Alain de Boton and Paul Auster. Auster starts at 40:50. He also gives his view on Bush.

Guardian: "The government is set to bow to backbench pressure and back legislation tomorrow which would ban foxhunting before the start of 2006 season."
I guess foxhunting is one of those 'sports' that is the exclusive domain of the rich landowners (and some lowerclass helpers).
In these cybertimes we go hunting on the net to Wildtiere-Live, for instance. On a Mac use ... hm Safari.
It's red squirrel week. Squirrel webcams here and here.
