anyone lived in a pretty how town
My Pre-AP classes tackled one of my favorite poems today: e.e. cummings' "anyone lived in a pretty how town" (read it). Predictably, after I read the poem to them as they followed along with their copies, they looked up at me at the end as though I had horns growing out of my head. But then after going through the poem line-by-line, breaking it down into manageable pieces, most of them came to understand that it's actually a very simple story about anyone, who lives, marries noone, and then dies in his pretty how town.
Interestingly enough, George Lucas of Star Wars fame produced a short film version of the poem while in film school. I couldn't get the film clip provided on that page to work very well, but you might have better luck.
For those seeking more information on the poem either because it's needed for my class, or you're just interested/curious, here are a couple of sites worth reading:
A good book to pick up if you're interested in his work, but don't want everything he wrote, is 100 Selected Poems by E. E. Cummings. Think of it as a sort of greatest hits package.
