Photoshop Purgatory

I mentioned earlier today that I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 photos to sort through from the London trip.  That was not true.  Turns out that I have over 500.  From those, I've narrowed things down to around 200 to 250 that I'll end up posting online.  One of which being the very cool picture of Big Ben and Parliament from across the Thames seen to here to the right of this paragraph that I took on the last night we had in London.  Not all of the pictures I took look this good, but if you come home with those 500 photos I told you about, some will look damn good.  Also helps if you are patient and sort of know what you're doing with a camera.

Now I know I promised to post all these pictures I have (the folks who went on the trip want to seem them, I know), but it is taking me forever and a year to process them all for posting.  If I just threw them online as is, they would be too big (1600x1200 resolution) and often times a little too raw for my liking.  So I'm shrinking them down to 800x600 on average, cropping the images to just how I want them, and if I need a little retouching, I do that as well, though not as extensively as you might think.  For instance all I did to the night time photo above was shrink it down to fit on this page, add a drop shadow to make it stand off the page, sharpen it a bit, and that's it.  I did have to use a five second exposure when I took the photo, though, to get the brilliant light.  That was just trial and error while Walter and I stood there freezing to death that night.  The patience with me he showed that night was admireable.  Or insane, depending on your point of view.

So, instead of posting all of the pictures I have tonight, I'll will let you see 70 of them.  I've decided to place them on smugmug because I'd just end up using too much of the space I'm allocated here at RadioLand.  The pictures already uploaded are mostly in sequential order starting from the waiting for our first plane Saturday in San Antonio to Tuesday morning at the Tower of London.  I'll be adding captions to them as I have time.  You can also leave comments for each photo if you have something you'd like to say.  I'll try to post more tomorrow.  Here they are:

More about the trip tomorrow.

Miss Me?

Got in a little past midnight from our jaunt to London.  Much needed sleep followed shortly thereafter.

If all goes to plan, there will be a massive posting about the trip later today.  My DSL modem isn't working properly, so it will be slow going.  Plus, I've got over 300 photos to sort through, memories to recollect, and my body needs to adjust to local time.

So check back with me later, and hopefully I'll have a few things to say about the UK, what a great time we had, and the odd things I discovered about my students.  Or you can just look at the pretty pictures.

Until then, stare at me and the giant beefeater bear from the Tower of London.
