COPS R.I.P.

As we are on the brink of war, my heart is heavy.  Not because of the thousands of people who may die soon on either side of the conflict in Iraq.  Not because of the families torn apart because of military call-ups.  Nope.  I'm in mourning because Paul Stojanovich is apparently dead.

"Paul who?" you ask?  I'll tell you Paul who!  Mr. Stojanovich was the driving force behind my favorite television show:  COPS.

Now who will guarantee a steady stream of doughnut-armored defenders of the peace into my home every Saturday night?  Who will carry the torch into this new era of exploitative, reality television?  Who is going to keep me in touch with the crack ho's, meth addicts, self-employed models, DUI queens, and the mentally diverse who make this world just a little unsavory (but in a good way)?

Sad thing is, Paul didn't have to leave us.  That dramatic cliffside photo-op could have been avoided so easily.  Now I just wonder how long it'll be before that last photo is posted to the internet.  The one where he realizes he's stepped back a little too far.  And I can't begin to imagine how his fiancee, Kim Srowel, must feel:

"Just a little further back, Paul.  Just one more step back, honey, and this will be a perfect shot."

"Agggghhhhhhh........!!"

Couldn't she just have stepped back?  Wouldn't that have worked just the same?

Robert Frost was wrong.  It isn't the road not taken that is so crucial in times like these.  It's the step back both taken and not.  I'll miss ya, Paul.  I'll take a step back from a cliff the next chance I get in your memory.

This does remind me of an old Darwin Award where someone chose to jump off a cliff with a parachute to prove how safe it was and didn't live to tell the tale.

Cliffs.  Just stay away.
