Not As Bad As Burning Them, But...
The only bookstore in Eagle Pass (hometown of this here website) is closing down. By comparison, the city of Del Rio (an hour north of here) has managed to keep its Waldenbooks open way longer than ours, even though the population of that town is smaller than Eagle Pass. They even have a used books store. But our Waldenbooks will soon shut its doors after its second attempt at keeping a franchise alive here. Actually, I'm amazed it has managed to stay in business for as many years as it has. I'm not sure how long it has been, but lets just say that for several years it has clung onto the hopes that people in this town might some day overcome their fear of books.
Ha! Might as well as hang your hopes on NBA players refusing to smoke dope.
But I will say that the Eagle Pass Waldenbooks put up a good fight. I guess they just couldn't sell enough wrestling and videogame magazines to stay afloat. That's honestly all I ever saw anyone browsing at the very front of the store whenever I'd stop by. Almost no one would venture to the middle or back of the store where actual books could be found. Rather than ask, "Can I help you?" a store employee would often ask, "Are you lost?" if they found you toward the back. And frankly, you could sprawl out in the middle of some aisles, take a nap, and not have to worry about being disturbed altogether. Same thing goes for sacrificing virgins or raising farm animals.
All hope is not lost for Eagle Pass, though. Technically you can still buy books at Wal-Mart. If you're into bibles and romance novels, they've got you covered. Their selection of wrestling and videogame magazines is top-notch, too.

PS: Big news I promised for today has been postponed for another couple of weeks. Not that anyone was in danger of losing any sleep if I didn't let you know about the postponement...
