If you are a teenager in the Chicago school system, and you have just made the brilliant decision to drop out of school, you and your parents will now have to sign a waiver that you are giving up your "educational rights."
What are these rights, exactly?
- You have the right to remain stupid.
- Anything you think can and will be held against you in the real world.
- You have a right to live off your mommy and daddy until they kick your lazy ass out of the house.
- If you cannot afford the basic necessities of life (a.k.a. "bling bling"), then there's always shoplifting.
A waiver to drop out. Unbelieveable. Don't they know that most kids who drop out don't exactly show up at school one more time to formaly announce their resignation from education? Don't they know that those who choose to drop out probably aren't bright enough to understand statements like:
--"I will be more likely to rely on the state welfare system for my livelihood."
--"I will be considerably less able to properly care for and educate my children."
Rather than a last-ditch effort to convince a kid that dropping out isn't exactly the way to go in life, this sounds more like a last-ditch effort of a school system trying to cover its butt.
At least its better than what the federal government is doing. They're just providing an ugly chart to scare the kids back into class. Real effective way to sell the whole "No Child Left Behind" idea, Bush.
