Top Of The Tops
I'll admit that I'm a sucker for top lists. Top ten. Top twenty. Top one hundred. Top three thousand four hundred and sixty-three. Doesn't matter. If someone's made a list of the best of the best, I'll find the time to read it.
Especially if the person who wrote it is Canadian.
Because really, who else would you turn to in order to get an accurate reading of what is worthwhile and what isn't? Who has their finger on the pulse of pop culture more firmly than Canada? I mean, they did give us Bryan Adams, right? "Summer of '69" rocks, right?
But then again, he did come up with "Everything I Do I Do it for You."
And Nelly Furtado is from there, right?
And some Canadians speak French.
And they say "eh" too much. And "Aboot."
But that doesn't mean they can't come up with a decent list of songs, though. Take for instance the list CBC Radio put out of the top five songs of each decade starting from 1900.
Actually, they cheated. They crammed 1900-1929 into one group. Then later they sat on the fence and gave ties for number five for the 70's and 80's. C'mon, a tie between "River" and "Walk on the Wildside"??? Lou Reed wins that going away!
I'm not exactly down with their 80's and 90's list either. There's few songs I despise more than "Billie Jean". And who among you even know who Joy Division is, much less can hum "Love Will Tear Us Apart"? Can't hum "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige, either, but then maybe that's just me.
But I will go along with their top four of the 1990's. I see those as iconic songs of the decade. Plus the list could have been much worse. I half expected to see a Celine Dion waste-of-decibels at number one.
Neeeaaaaarrrrr Faaaaaarrrrrrr WhereEEEEVVVVAAAARRRR You ARE!!!!
Yeah, Canada. You just aboot rule.
