Silent All These Years
One of my AP classes had their first crack at music analysis today. I went with the usual starter, "Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos, with the hopes that I could use it to get the concept of tone across. I'm pretty sure they enjoyed working with the song, though I'm also pretty sure that they still don't know what tone is.
But I figured that would happen going in. Tone isn't easy.
Those of you who have had my class before might remember the toughest line of the song to decipher. You know, the one about her being a mermaid in his jeans. That and the "Boy, you best pray that I bleed real soon" line also had them stumped for several minutes. Eventually we worked them out with a little guidance from yours truly.
Irony of Ironies: after using Tori Amos in that class this morning, I was at Ramstein tonight buying a dvd player for my classroom. As I stood in the checkout line, I glanced at the music dvds they have on display there. Lo and freakin' behold, a Tori Amos concert dvd was practically falling off the shelf.
Holy This Has Nothing To Do With A Higher Being So Don't Go There, Batman!
So yes, I have that dvd in right now and it has a strange start. Shows a bunch of fans out-doing each other on how many shows they've been to. One admits to seeing Tori Amos 125 times.
Holy I Know I Don't Have A Life, But You Really Don't Have A Life, Robin!
But the music's great, with some of these songs bringing back a ton of memories. Only disappointment? No "Silent All These Years" on it.
Can't have everything.
