Security Training
Ouch! My head hurts.
I spent the day in security training at Guru Labs in Bountiful.
My work day began at 6:00 AM with 2.5 hours of catching up on e-mail, documenting NOA agreements from last weeks travels and preparing for the training. It's all done on Red Hat Linux machines. I don't have many hours on this operating system.
The training went from 9:00 until 5:30 with one ten minute break in the morning and a 50 minute lunch.
We got through two labs and nearly three chapters in the training manual. One of the aggravations I experienced in the evening session was having my workstation hacked and remotely shut down during the end of analyzing one of my data sets.
Every workstation has the same user name, password and root password. One of the early labs involved logging on remotely to a "lab partners" workstation via telnet session and making some changes. One of my "lab partners" got a little too frisky. I changed the passwords on both of the workstations I'd commandeered. The first lesson of security. Secure yourself.
The offending individual felt bad. Especially since he didn't think he'd be caught. But actually he did me a favor and taught me a simple, valuable lesson.........
