THE Super Bowl
Who knows why certain thoughts cross our minds. More to the point, who knows why certain thoughts cross my mind.
Tonight's game, Super Bowl XXXVIII (38), was pretty good. At least for a Super Bowl. Of course I was asked who I wanted to win. I gave my standard reply, "Green Bay."
That's right. To me THE Super Bowl was played 38 years ago. That was a real rivalry. None of this mamby pamby AFC/NFC, we've played each other in the regular season weirdness.
Back in the day it was the NFL. The upstart AFL was a whole 'nother league. And it was a grudge match with the spoils going to the winner. Yeah, that was real football. None of these pampered athletes that don't know how to control their tempers.
Some things get better with age. That first Super Bowl. That was real entertainment. Sure. Today it is a spectacle. The game is just a small part of the whole package. But you have to love the whole Green Bay of the 1960s thing. I was there. Not in the stadium. Watching on television.
Sometimes I wonder if there isn't too much sports coverage. In my childhood part of what made sport so much fun was that it was special. We didn't have the Internet, Tivo, VCRs, ESPN or Sports Talk Radio. We had game day coverage on radio and television. And the next day's paper.
Well, tomorrow I'm sure that I could spend hours going through all of the stories, stats, etc. But I'm probably going to be satisfied to know that the Patriots won. That's enough...........
