Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Addicted to Blogging

One night in January I returned home to find my wife and daughter very frustrated. They were right in the middle of completing a critical homework assignment (for my daughter) and could not get the printer working.

This situation had been going on for some time. My wife informed me that she had checked to make sure the printer was plugged in. She also checked the cable from printer to PC. All seemed okay.

I sat down at the keyboard, thought about it for a minute or so, and checked the printer queue. Sure enough, a print job had hung and about a dozen or so other jobs were waiting. Easy solution. Clear the queue and reprint. Everybody was happy.

Then, as I sat down to think about things my mind went into blogging mode. I wanted to write a piece about the futility of thinking that the "average" computer user will ever be able to get past the basics. I also thought about how my coworkers and I, fellow techies, think of ourselves as "average" users. The story flowed in my mind and I really wanted to post a story. Then I remembered that I was on a vacation from blogging. So I let the moment pass.

But I had this same type of experience many times during January. I just resisted the temptation, realizing that there would be plenty of opportunities in the future to express my opinion............
