Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Patches to Patches

The UEN network has somewhere north of 750,000 endpoints. That number alone would lead a rational person to conclude that at least a few of those nodes would be inadequately patched servers and workstations. Automated searches make it simple to expose those patch-challenged nodes. The work "hopeless" comes to mind when contemplating this reality.

Then there is this article, Patch and Pray, to help push me over the edge. Read it. Think about it.

The most disturbing aspect of this article is that there is nothing new here. Patching is a problem. We can't depend on users to patch their workstations. We can't even depend on system admins to keep their servers patched. Heck, we can't even depend on IT Professional to completely understand the magnitude of the problem. We still have colleagues who think that the solution to a compromised machine is a good old-fashioned reboot.

So. As the old saying goes, Read it and Weep.......
