Nails, nails, nails
I've been practicing so much (getting ready for a wedding), but the last two weeks, I've broken 3 nails doing other things! I'm getting weary because "broken nail=no guitar playing" until it grows back. With my luck, I'll break them all the day before I play the wedding. I've used nail coatings before, everything from Sally Hansen to Crazy Glue, but they still break at times. Eeck, I'm having a conversation re: nails. Word... lol. -David • 3/10/04; 3:09:04 PM
I've heard that things like doing dishes, washing the dog and the car are a "no-no" when you're a guitar player. - Naomi • 3/10/04; 3:10:53 PM
David: I have not found that ANY supplement makes a noticeable difference. I use Crazy Glue together with acrylic powder. Just buy the clear acrylic powder in any beauty supply shop - get a really small canister because it will last you a long time. Put a thin coat of Crazy Glue on your nails, I never put anything on the pinky, and dip the nail into the container with acrylic powder. Wait a little while and then put another coat of Crazy Glue on top, dip into the powder again if you need a thicker coat. Then proceed to do a few coats of Crazy Glue as the powder will absorb quite a bit. This process will take a while and the nail will not be completely hard for some time. I usually try to let it cure overnight before play guitar and I will do a last coat of Crazy Glue to smooth out the surface in the morning. When the "nail armor" comes off, usually after a week or so, I often heat some olive oil and dip the bare nails into it - as hot as you can stand it, because the hotter the oil, the thinner it gets and the easier it penetrates the nail surface. That seems to help a lot in keeping the nail supple.

Naomi: I do dishes and they do take their toll...I don't wash the car because I live in the desert - I went to a car wash on Monday, for the first time in at least six months, only because I sold my lovely Audi TT yesterday...my dogs are too big and furry to attempt to wash myself - in fact they usually get only one bath per year, which is more than they would get in Tibet. I hear that they never even get brushed in Tibet because that makes them look even bigger and meaner...I think after years and years one simply becomes more aware of ones nails and learns to handle stuff differently. When I was in my twenties I would break nails all of the time, but it's probably been a year since I broke a nail...and when that happens I use nail silk or toilet-paper to fashion a fake nail - no prefab nails for this guitarist!

I realize that one reason I don't break nails anymore is that I do almost everything that is "nail-threatening" with my left hand. I figure using my left hand more can only help strengthening my fingering hand.

Luna Negra XL 1999
Music: La Semana work mixes
Mood: laid back
I am communicating with Bravo! regarding the performance video we made in Toronto in 1999. They would be willing to grant me the right to sell a DVD of this show as long as I pay for the design and manufacturing and they get half of the revenue. Bravo! sent me "Snakecharmer" on DVD and it looks and sounds great. Question is how many people would be interested in buying this one hour DVD? I will inquire about the cost of pressing (now there's an old fashioned term that still stems from the days when the groove on a vinyl record was "pressed") one or two thousand DVDs and figure out how much we would need to sell them for.

More Transit teasers....
Music: Transit - Jon Gagan
Mood: mellow
“One of my favorite albums to do with Ottmar was “The Hours between Night + Day”, says Gagan. “We virtually lived in the studio for the duration of the production and did a lot of experimenting. I remember having the sensation that we weren’t confined by genre- we were not attempting to make “Flamenco” albums or “Jazz” albums- we were simply making music. I found this very liberating, and I wanted to bring that feeling to the making of “Transit”
We still haven't received the Transit CD from the plant....but soon. I'll keep you posted.
