Album of the Day: "Where Shall You Take Me?" - Damien Jurado
I know I've plugged it before, but it's just that good.
The past few months it seems like I've been having an ongoing, semiconscious straining to reconnect with my childhood. When I was little, my brothers would listen to Johnny Cash songs, since his form of country was about the only kind of music allowed in the house (except southern gospel, of course). A few months ago I bought Cash's newest album, "The Man Comes Around." I have the Jurado album with his slow, folksy delivery and the antiquated-looking photo of a small country house in a field that reminds me of my grandfather's place and listen to it over and over again. I'll pull up Indianapolis 500 boxscores from the late 80's/early 90's, the first times I ever saw the race, and try to remember everything I can about guys like Didier Theys and Ludwig Heimrath, Jr. (which isn't very much, probably because there wasn't much about either of their 500 careers worth remembering.) I'll pull out an old hymnal and mull over songs we would sing in church as a kid.
I could try to convince myself it's not because I've made much less of myself than I should have given the circumstances, but I'm not easily assuaged.
