This entry is dedicated to Pete Yankees win! The-e-e-e-e-e Yankees win!
Meanwhile, life is about to grind to a halt here in Bloomington, aka Chicago South, where the Cubs are playing the Atlanta Braves in the fifth and deciding game of their division series. The Cubs are trying to shake a 90-year losing tradition and their nationwide network of frothing faithful fans is behind them.
The Cubs are an anachronism. They play in the country's third largest city, have a huge nationawide fan base thanks to a national WGN television countract, play in an old scenic stadium that doubles as a Chicago tourist attraction. So why don't they win? For the same reasons.
The Tribune Co., which owns the franchise, knows that the Cubs are going to be popular regardless of how terrible they are. They've taken advantage of the franchise's status as America's lovable losers to not spend anymore than they have to. After all, if you're going to rake it in with a low-spending loser, why spend more to win? The Cubs won't win consistently until the people pulling the purse strings are forced to realize punishment for losing.
