The juxtaposition between the City Council candidate endorsements by Greensboro’s two leading newspapers is stark. The Rhino sends all of the at-large incumbents packing; the News & Record wants to keep them all. I disagree with both.
I am grateful to John Hammer and the Rhino Times to have received their top billing, but I agree with Mr. Sun that they were wrong to exclude Yvonne Johnson, especially since they had political room to do so.
Even though they identified me as the top challenger, The News & Record demonstrated that they have lost touch with the electorate just as much as some of our current City Council members by endorsing the status quo in the at-large race. The voters are keen for some change on Council. Endorsing all of the incumbents causes them to lose as much credibility as the Rhino did for jettisoning everyone in my opinion.
Both papers agree that District 1 Councilman Belvin Jessup must go but they disagree on his replacement. In this race I agree with the N&R as I stated earlier. They wisely pegged T. Diane Bellamy-Small whose first challenge will be to fit her considerable name on the nameplate that will identify her as she takes her rightful place at the Council's desk.
The real race starts on Wednesday morning...
I will link to all of the endorsement information as soon as it becomes available.
