David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

I have great reservations about the "No Child Left Behind" act mainly because I am seeing how it actually affects my children's education.  Specifically the law narrows the scope of learning from what I have seen and brings higher achieving children down a couple of notches more than it elevates the lower acheiving student.   So far it is a burdensome unfunded mandate on already strapped school systems including Guilford County.

The Washington Post reports on how Bush's attempt at compassionate conservatism might just backfire.  "(Bush) could find the law complicating his reelection effort, political strategists from both parties say..."  (Thanks Annie)

I will be on Ogi Overman's new radio show tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon hopefully discussing something other than the stadium debate.

Tune in to WGOS AM1070...  on the net or via traditional means.

The N&R did background checks on all of the candidates in the upcoming elections.

I faired well in the voting records category (I have voted in every municipal election since moving to Greensboro).  However, Mark Binker did report that I owed $11.29 on my 2002 property taxes for one of my four investment properties I owned that year.

What his check did not reveal is that I struggled to pay last year's taxes at all and that is why the $11.29 showed up as an interest charge.

The last couple of years have been tough in the rental business.  Tenants are hard to come by and the ones I have are experiencing difficulties paying on time with the full amount due.  Even with spiraling costs, I have not raised my rents in three years in an effort to keep the tenants I have.

The 11.5% vacancy rate in Greensboro is one of the main reasons we worked so hard on the Renters to Buyers Downpayment Assistance Program that I released last week.

A former candidate from another part of the country reports a similar experience to the one I had on election night.  (see the comments which also include a rare spousal communication)

The weight is still there, but I am adjusting.
