Ok..., just one more observation on baseball and I promise I will shut up...and this time I really mean it.

I have been out distributing yard signs this morning throughout Greensboro as I have been at every chance I get. . This qualifies me, in a unique way, to be the "observer of yard sign trends" in the at-large race and the baseball question:

  • Don Vaughn - evenly distributed except in the black neighborhoods and neighborhoods with lots of "vote for the ordinance" signs.
  • Yvonne Johnson - evenly distributed everywhere.
  • Tom Philips - non-existent (save for two on Sunset)
  • Jeff Nimmer/Jason Arispe - distributed mainly on any property that Kotis Properties owns (Jeff works for Kotis)
  • Bill Burkeley - non-existent
  • Vote "for" the ordinance - pretty even distribution, none in black neighborhoods, heavy concentration in Aycock, Fisher Park, Glenwood, Westerwood.
  • Vote "against" the ordinance - heavy concentration in new/old Irving Park, none in black neighborhoods, very sporadic elsewhere.

It was reported this morning that the pro-stadium forces have raised over $58,000 since their PAC's  inception about a month ago.  The same article shows their no-stadium counterpart has raised $100.00.

A friend of mine articulated in an email today the problem that she and a lot of other people had with the "vote against the ordinance" forces original tactic: attack the people, not the issue.  They dropped the "Say No To Naysayers" from their second run of yardsigns.

Sez my friend, "I am so offended by the "naysayer" signs.  However new signs have appeared in my neighborhood (Old Irving Park) without that offensive reference, so someone realized a boo-boo"

Indeed someone did... the arrogance and condecention probably costs them a lot of votes, but we will see on Tuesday.

Loraine Ahearn cuts through all of the "he said... she said, they bought... they sold" questions about how good of a job Project Homestead has done.  This N&R column is the first time I have heard the story from the customer's point of view.

When we get past everything else, the bottom line is how well low income homebuyers are being served.  If Ahearn's story is indicative of Homestead's business-as-usual practices, our City government has been dealing with the wrong people.
