OK, I admit it, I am a thief. I have been a thief of ideas for many years. I have always found it easier to steal someone's idea and adapt it to my situation than to think originally mainly because there are so many ideas out there that never get used that I figure no one will ever notice. The problem is... I notice.
It is one thing to steal an idea and use it privately but quite another when an idea is used for self promotion in the public arena. I have two confessions to make.
The idea about starting a War Memorial Stadium foundation originally came from a friend of mine named Susan E. about a month ago. The idea was again mentioned to me by John Hammer, editor of the Rhino Times, Wednesday as he was relating a conversation he had just had with the head of one of Greensboro's foundations I told John something to the effect that I thought it was a great idea and then left his office without confessing that I had just swiped it and might consider making it my own.
While I doubt that he is even aware of my post on the subject, I will call John on Monday and ask him if he wants to take the lead on the project and tell him of my idea theft. The project is rightfully his to exploit as he sees fit. I will be pleased to help in any way I can as pennance.
My second confession involves an admission of collusion. Roch Smith Jr. came up with the innovative renters to buyers program. Although he and I have worked on the details of the program for over a month, it is his idea. This is not the first of his ideas that I have adopted as my own with his blessing, nor will it be the last.
Roch insists that he is the idea guy and should stay in the background. However, just like the foundation idea, I feel uncomfortable taking credit for something that I didn't invent; especially if I plan to use it for poltical gain.
Let me go ahead and disclaim something to the world. Most of the good and seemingly original ideas that have been, or ever will be, attributed to me were probably either stolen or adopted. Let it be known now and for all time that I am an idea cleptomaniac. DO NOT EVER let me in on a good idea that you don't want me to try to implement because I will make your idea mine in a New York minute and run with it. You might only get credit (or blame) for the idea if my conscience flares up.
