The N&R's Chalkboard blog is doing a great job of covering Guilford County School's dismal performance on the just released state-measured report cards known ABC.
Yesterday blogger/reporter Jennifer Fernandez posted some preliminary data comparing Guilford to other NC metro districts and some other depressing stuff. Her analysis shows that we pretty much suck in comparison to the other big districts except for Forsyth County. But there is more... much more... and Jennifer tells her blog audience how to read all about it...
"If you want the entire package (and when I say package, I'm talkin' big chunk of the front page plus full inside page blow out!) you'll need to regress practically to the dark ages and pick up a hardcopy of the paper..." Heh.
The 'hardcopy' (online version here) does have a lot of information including a regional breakdown (PDF file) of individual county scores; school by school. There are also several "we're studying it" comments from local administration types in the article. Also included are some sidebar comments and snippets from local notables including verbatim comments from frequent Chalkboard participants Deborah and Buckmtn.
From my recollection, this melding of blog reporting/feedback and traditional reporting is a first for the N&R and it works very well. (But our schools? ...apparently not so well.)
