Quoting from New Orleans' Times-Picayunebreaking news: "People are leaving the Superdome to go to Canal Street to loot... " (Link via the new and excellent Burlington, NC blogger David Boyd)
**************
Update: Obviously the situation on the ground has changed since I posted this. What I saw and read about two days ago was people taking TV's, stereos, guns. As it stands now, and if I were in the same boat as folks in New Orleans, I'd be in the grocery stores with everyone else taking what I need.
Unless you are privy to the titles to Cone's posts, which only show up on the news feed summary at Greensboro101.com (ed. and other aggregators), you wouldn't know today's post mentioning Sen. Jesse Helms carried the following title: Sign of the apocalypse. Heh.
Ed, of late your titles are almost as good as your posts. Unleash them on the world.
Someone needs to tell District 1 City Council candidate Luther B. Falls that, despite the fact that it is a very important issue for all of Greensboro, the position he is seeking has little-to-nothing to do with providing citizens with "a quality education" (PDF file). It would also be interesting to learn how he plans to help provide a "high quality of life for senior citizens" if elected. (Link via The Inside Scoop.)
I'm sorry, but Luther B. Falls just dropped of my viable candidate radar screen. Next.
"We suppose that, when asked individually, virtually every African American in Guilford county would agree that ...our leadership, qualitatively, leaves much to be desired.
Having said that, we are quick to accept a part of the blame for its dearth of effective leadership... While we must admit our quasi-advancement, insofar as the political front is concerned, we are still unhappy with the basic results of those individuals placed in positions of influence.
Now we would be first to admit to our own ineffective leadership, because we are charged with being the voice of the African American sector of Guilford county..."
I am a great fan of transparency, and Kilimanjaro is down right see-through on this point. He wants things to change and is willing to do something about it.
Greensboro webloggers are coming of age in the political arena. At the last Meetup we began planning for a local candidate forum in advance of the upcoming City Council elections. The date and venue are as follows:
"The candidates forum will be held Tuesday, September 27th at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery Auditorium on the UNC-G campus. An informal meet-and-greet will begin at 6:15 PM. Candidates will be allowed to bring and distribute campaign literature. The forum is scheduled to begin promptly at 6:45 PM and will last until 8:30 PM."
By acclamation (and because he wasn't in attendance), local bloggers drafted Michael Christopher to moderate this (as far as I know) first-of-its-kind forum. Questions for candidates will be submitted by local webloggers and selected for candidate response at the next Blogger Meetup on September 21st.
Knowing the local blogger crowd, this forum promises to be lively, irreverent and informative... mark your calendars. More information to come, but in the meantime....
If you have a question or issue that you, as a reader, would like to hear asked of local candidates. Post them in the comments below.
