I received and email yesterday questioning the N&R's article about efforts to land the ACC baseball tournament in First Horizon Park for 2007.
"... Did I miss something while watching life pass me by or was not this to be the role of War Memorial? The building of the new park would free up War Memorial to be the premier field for amateur baseball. Now I know there is a fine line between the pros and collegiate sports, but I'm sure they still recognize student athletes as being amateurs!"
No, dear reader... the campaign pledge that War Memorial was destined to be the "premier venue for amateur baseball in North Carolina" has been modified somewhat. It now reads like this: "War Memorial Stadium will be the premier venue for amateur baseball in North Carolina for any amateur event that the owners of First Horizon Park don't want to host or any event that might actually draw a crowd."
I guess you missed the updated memo.

Meanwhile... The first meeting between the architect and interested citizens regarding the renovation of War Memorial is slated for September 12th. Although the upcoming process will be interesting and inclusive, the big question in my mind will be how much of the structure will be torn down and how much of it will be saved and rehabbed?
But this should not be a concern. Because in addition to the "premier amatuer venue" pledge cited above was this statement heard emanating from Action Greensboro and others during the debate on whether or not to build First Horizon: "Now come on David... no one is talking about tearing it down..."
