Above all, have a good time

I was just thinking recently about how much I love food. Awhile back, I had a blind date with some guy who said, over dinner at a nice restaurant mind you (okay, I picked out the restaurant), that he really didn’t care much for food and would be perfectly content eating hot dogs every day. When the waitress came by and asked how things were (in my opinion, delicious), he complained that his dish wasn’t anything special. Oy, way to impress. I realized it would never work. I love food, and to share good food – whether cooking at home or eating out – is like sharing love.

So it is with some sadness, but also gratitude and celebration, that I heard today that Julia Child died at the age of 91. I have to say I rarely watched her shows nor learned to cook in the French style, but I admired her verve and her spirit. And she may be my favorite alumna from my alma mater. Here’s what MSNBC had to say about her today:

America is fortunate that Julia Child lived among us. Her hearty appetite, curious nature, and passion for the pleasures of life were contagious, not only for those who actually make her recipes but for all of us. Because of her, American food, at home and in restaurants, no longer means perfection salad, overcooked peas and roast beef. It means the infinite variety of fresh seafood, grains, fruits and berries, nuts, vegetables, poultry and meat raised and served in appetizing array from coast to coast.

She apparently loved every minute of her long life. The Web site for "Bon Appétit! Julia Child's Kitchen at the Smithsonian" summarizes her wisdom -- for the kitchen and beyond --in these few, happy words: "…above all, have a good time."
