Plaice Cove

Saturday morning I drove up to see my folks, visited a bit then went down to the beach. It was about 90° and humid, so I went in the water several times to cool off even though it meant wading into water so cold your legs ached and dipping in full-body caught your breath in your chest. Ah, the refreshing North Atlantic! I went to a pretty little town beach at Plaice Cove with a gentle curve that leads up towards Little Boar’s Head where I could see cars winding up and down the hill along route 1A. One of the nice things about the NH seacoast is that you can drive right along much of it, with some lovely views on the way. Bicycling is even better – I’ll have to bring my bike up there again one of these days.

This time there weren’t any mysterious Sea Brillo Pads like there were a couple of years ago. I saw them myself – looking vaguely like “road apples” but on closer inspection looked and smelled sea-weedy. News of these mystery objects made the national “news of the weird” columns that summer. I’m not sure anyone ever figured out exactly what they were.

My folks were somewhat better behaved this time, my mother in better spirits and seeming a bit sharper than last time and my father reigning in his irritation for the most part. My mother is desperate to do more, see more, enjoy life while they still have most of their faculties, but my father doesn’t want to do anything. “I want to rest.” Such is the standoff, since she’s entirely reliant on him now.

Anyway, I’m back home for another busy work week. It’s the last week of the summer season – next weekend is Labor Day Weekend already!
