The Search For Truth [posted by Troy] As many of my friends know, my PhD research is looking at how students understand knowledge (epistemology), and how we can use this understanding to better teach research methods. Thus, I have a big interest in how people in our society take information and understand "truth." Or, why do we believe what we believe? Most psychological reserach shows that beliefs are formed early in life, and there is little that can be done to change belief. Education, reading, debate, politics, religion, etc have very little impact on established belief. You see, belief is the underpinnings of the stories we tell ourselves about the world. These are the things that give meaning and form to life. Beliefs cause us to ignore parts of stories, act on other parts of stories, and decide whom to believe on what issues. Education has some impact on belief, but only over time. Life altering circumstances, and significant gaps between belief and observed reality are the things cause us to alter belief, and, then, reconstruct our understanding of reality. I bring all of this up because there were a couple of interesting article that I came across recently. First, is this article, Food News Blues, from Newsweek that talks about how media over-simplifies scientific research. The other is this NPR piece, 'Angels and Demons' Draws Tourists to Rome, about Dan Brown's novels and how they impact our views of history. Think about what you believe and what kind of stories you tell yourself.

Bizarre Love Triangle [posted by Troy] A few of us were out enjoying the weekend, and we heard the song "Bizarre Love Triangle" (lyrics are below, but they hardly do the song justice). We started debating who wrote this song. Well, this is one of those songs that is so great that it has been covered all over the place. Originally, this was written by New Order, but it has been covered by Stabbing Westward, Crytal Method, Commercial Breakup and others. Anyway, I wanted to put this out there for everyone to answer the debate. Every time I think of you I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue It's no problem of mine but it's a problem I find Living a life that I can't leave behind There's no sense in telling me The wisdom of a fool won't set you free But that's the way that it goes And it's what nobody knows While every day my confusion grows Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You'll say the words that I can't say I feel fine and I feel good I'm feeling like I never should Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday I'm not sure what this could mean I don't think you're what you seem
I do admit to myself That if I hurt someone else Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You'll say the words that I can't say
