Using P2P Technology for Content Delivery

Jibe Inc. is aiming to use the advantages offered by peer-to-peer technology—including little or no hardware or monthly usage costs—in its new content delivery network software.

The Tampa, Fla., company on Monday released EdgeBurst Delivery System 1.0, which officials said will offer significant improvements in performance, scale and cost over more traditional hardware-based cache or streaming servers. ADVERTISEMENT

According to CEO Neal Ater, the convergence of expanding broadband connectivity, compression technology such as mp4, and greater encryption and other security for digital content has opened the door for peer-based content delivery for such uses as training and corporate communications.

It will reduce bandwidth costs while speeding up rich media downloads, giving enterprises a "TV-quality standard of user experience," said Jibe President Greg Schmitzer.

At the core of EdgeBurst, which is compatible with popular media players such as RealNetwork Inc.'s RealPlayer, Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Player and Apple Computer Inc.'s QuickTime, is MediaScout, a Web-based centralized server component that gives the administrator control over the content delivery network. It provides a user interface into the peer network, controls user access to content, tracks content locations and gives users search results, company officials said.

FuseBox is a development kit that enables enterprises to integrate the system into their content and management software. It comes with integration points, custom Web site tags and application program interfaces. EdgeBurst enables content items to be downloaded from other EdgeBurst clients simultaneously, which increases download speeds, the company said.

EdgeBurst also enables users to view video playback during a multi-source download.

Key to the EdgeBurst Delivery System are its security features, which include encryption of all messaging between peers or between peers and the administrator, and all content is secured using Secure Sockets Layer encryption. Patent-pending hashing algorithms are used to verify the content, and another feature, PeerCommand, enables the system to be centrally managed using digital certificates.

The system can either be hosted by the enterprise or by Jibe, Ater said.

Pricing for the EdgeBurst Delivery System starts at $50,000 for up to 5,000 users/subscribers.

Personal Information Architectures.

Gene has an interesting post about personal information architectures, something he spoke about at the recent Future of IA Retreat. While the recent interest in social classification and folksonomy is a large reason to talk about personal info. architecture, I think that Thomas Vanderwal has also been talking about the issue for a few years as the Personal Info Cloud.

Buffalo TeraStation 1TB Network Storage

buffalo_terastation.jpg.jpg imageI was too lazy this past Friday to write about it, but Buffalo has introduced a new Network Attached Storage (NAS) device for you storage-obsessive folk. The "TeraStation," features four 250GB hard drives giving a total 1TB (and yes I know 1TB = 1024GB but too bad) of storage. What I like most of all is the price¡Xat around $1000 USD, the TeraStation just might find its way into a few well-heeled consumer's homes.

For those of you who do decide to pick one up, you'll be delighted to know it features four operational modes. There's two boring "just store shit" modes, but two modes utilize RAID like there's no tomorrow. Also, it connects via Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0, so surely you'll be able to fill it up with your Suprnova legally downloaded media in no time. By the way, though Buffalo products have found their way to America, the American Buffalo page makes no mention of it yet.

Vodafone Audio Player Concept Phone

vodafone_concept.jpg imageI spied this over at Keitai Watch and thought you guys might get a kick out of it. It may still be in the "looking like a cheesy concept model that will never become an actual product" stages, but I felt as though it was sufficiently nifty to share. Obviously intended to be used as an music player, this new Vodafone concept model can playback audio even when closed. You've got your dock-type setup with integrated speakers (that also recharges the phone), and it comes with a remote control. It's a "remote" remote too¡Xusing Bluetooth and all that good stuff.

Sony Announces VAIO VGN-U750P (U70)

sony_vgn-u750p.jpg imageOkay, so I'm sort of confused. Last we had heard, Sony was canceling the Vaio U50/U70 palmtop PC in Japan due to lack of sales, but as of today they've announced their intention to sell it on the US market. How very strange.

The American version will be called the VGN-U750P and share the same 1.1GHz Pentium M as the U70 has, and will come with 512MB on non-upgradable RAM. This is very interesting decision on the part of Sony, and I'm (obviously) very surprised they decided to launch here. It's an interesting product, but not one that I think is practical for most people. I even reviewed it, if you care to understand why.

IM Flower Pot

im_flower.jpg imageThis flower is a project from MediaLab Europe¡Xit blooms each time a specific person logs into their IM client. It's intended to evoke a "sense of presence" of friends and family. I do the same thing for my loved ones, except it's less like a wireless flower pot and more like a jar of skin that I smell. (Thanks, Mike!)

HP z545 Digital Entertainment Center Impressions

hpentertainmentcenter_2.jpg imageMedia Centers are popping up like wildflowers across the Kansas prarie, and like those wildflowers, most of them will get trampled underfoot by angry farmers, never to be seen again. Nobody can tell at this point which varieties will thrive and which will wither away into nothingness, but everybody's got an opinion. Sparktoblog got their hands on an HP z545 Digital Entertainment Center and offers us some initial impressions on this entry. It looks like HP has done a good job integrating the z545 in with other A/V equipment in more than looks, with almost every kind of input and output possible¡Ximpressions seem favorable so far.
