The office is pretty empty today, as most of my colleagues have taken
the day off in advance of the long holiday weekend. I have done
most of my work for the day, so I am just killing some time before I
leave and fight the expected holiday traffic on I-95 this
afternoon.
Yesterday, my old manager made a comment to me about my blog. Apparently, I made a comment about him back in December,
and he had remembered it. In a verbal and electronic
conversation, we discussed it. At first, I was a bit surprised
that he found me, and for a brief moment I had worried about any
potential ramifications that may come of it. I was even worried
about potentially having to extend the olive branch to him. When
I mentioned that, he replied that I "have said far worse things about
[him] than that in the past."
Once we started talking, though, my worries faded. He had seen my
comment, and he decided that in his new managerial role he was going to
try to "exceed expectations on that one." I have to admit that I
have never hated my old manager. In many ways, I still like him
and I hold him in high regards.
It was quite a coincidence that the above happened while the Baltimore
Blogosphere was rippling with other bloggers becoming introspective,
modifying the manner in which they blog, or ending their blog
altogether. I had a brief internal debate about my lack of
anonymity. This morning, I came across a rather timely post in my aggregator by Mike.
My blog exists just for me to have a presence on the Internets.
Years ago, I used to have a webpage that I set up from the free space
my old ISP--Earthlink, the ISP
formerly known as Netcom. I had my resume on the site, and I had
some other links to things I liked on the Internet. Before that,
I tended to be active on technical newsgroups. Admittedly, blogs
are much easier for one to have a presence on the Internet than
designing one's page from the ground up. The bottom line is that
I have been floating around on the Internets for a while. With
Google, it just became easier to find me. My anonymity is long
gone, so my blog has my name plastered all over it.
So, I plan no changes. As the immortal Popeye once said, "I yam what I yam."
I will talk about whatever I damn well please, and two people will
continue to read it when they are bored reading other more interesting
stuff.
Time to get out of the office and beat some traffic.
