For all the bad things I say about Apple, it appears as though the leader of the Cult of Apple has a heart. According to CNET News.com,
Steve Jobs called the father of a 15-year-old boy that was killed in a
squabble over an iPod. That is quite an amazing gesture from the
CEO of Apple.

With those memorable words--at least for me--Vice Admiral James
Stockdale began his remarks in the 1992 Vice Presidential Debate.
You may recall that Adm. Stockdale was the running mate of H. Ross
Perot's surprising presidential run that year. Adm. Stockdale died yesterday of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Many political pundits and late-night comedians made fun of the words
he uttered that night in October. Initially, I thought it was
quite funny how a man running for Vice President could begin his
opening remarks in such a fashion. Even more entertaining was
when he had turned down his hearing aid during the debate and had to
ask that a question be repeated. It was doing some research
before the election that year that I found out how really bright he
was. Stockdale was a fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, a highly regarded think-tank located at the "Ivy League" of the West Coast.
I thought the quote was a funny one to have on the door of my room my freshman year at BU. So, thanks to the wonders of Windows 3.1, Microsoft Word,
and an inkjet printer, the quote was plastered on the door of my room
on the 10th floor of Rich Hall. I was telling someone this story
a few weeks ago, and I actually found myself pondering the deeper
meaning of Stockdale's words. Something that was initially funny
and appropriate at the moment grew to have a much deeper meaning many
years later.
