For those of you who do not know, today is Sysadmin Day.
On this day, we pay homage to the person who is the Systems
Administrator or Network Administrator in your place of business.
Six years ago, the last Friday of July was designated to be the
celebration of the person responsible for making your computing
environment work.
Given that I am one of these System Adminstrators, or Sysadmin for short, I demand satisfaction! Bring forth all types of geeky gifts, gift cards, beer, or other platitudes! Kneel before Zod!!! (Sorry about that, I got a little carried away.)
Actually, I do not need satisfaction, although I would not object to
any token of thanks. ;-> I do ask, though, that maybe
while at the office you poke your head into the IT Department and thank
your Friendly Neighborhood Systems Administrator. We do the hard
work so you don't have to--late nights and early mornings on a systems
upgrade, the answering of the page when a system goes down, and the
long drive in to address a system outage.
"Here's to you, Sysadmin Person!"

For the end of this week, it has been a bit of a denouement compared to
the early part of this week. Yesterday was spent documenting some
various procedures I had procrastined doing. Nothing like
spending a few hours updating a Wiki.
It has been in the back of my mind a bit, but today my impending
departure from the University has hit me a bit today. I spoke to
one of the people I have known since I started working here. She
and another woman on campus are like my "work grandmothers." They
remind me a lot of my grandmother, but they are two of the sweetest
people I know.
I broke the news to one of them this morning about my departure, and we
were catching up on various things. She asked me how long I had
been on campus, as she knew me when I was a graduate student.
When I said that it would have been nine years this fall since I
entered graduate school, it sort of hit me. I have spent a
surprising amount of time here. It's kind of funny how nine years
just sneaks up on you. I never thought I would have been here
this long. Time flies, in some respects. I will admit that
while I am not saddened by my impending departure, I do feel a little
pang.
Well, it's a quiet Friday. I have some calls and IM's to make today.
