good comment Make a point of reading the comments on my previous post, it puts a better light on what I said earlier. It's the lack of information that makes it frustrating, which means that comments like that are probably the most helpful thing going.
Oh, and to clarify (perhaps) my earlier post, I just don't want to see
the future direction of Zope be a closed one, and it sounds like that
wouldn't happen. |
disturbing The events that this post on ZopeZen reference are a little disturbing. It looks like the Zope Corporation is trying to pull itself back from the Zope Community a little bit. It looks like they are positioning themselves in a manner that makes it easier to move away from the Open Source stance they used to have. On a macro level, this looks a little like what happened to Ars Digita when they started to take the Ars Digita Community system in a closed and proprietary direction. Now, I don't know all the details, and I may be embarassing myself by making public postings about something I know nothing about, but like all bloggers, I'm not all that worried about that. I'm just posting what I'm thinking about, and it's quite possible I'm very wrong. The thing I liked about why Zope went Open Source, is that they were explicitly saying "Our strength is in our people, and we're so convinced of that that we are giving away our tools. You can use the same tools that we do to get the job done, for free, but you'll do a lot better if you hire our very smart people to solve your problems." And then they went and supplemented an already smart group of people with the original Python team. But one by one they are losing their consultants. And even Guido has announced that he is going elsewhere.
I will say it again -- I probably am getting this all wrong. I don't
want to be the guy spewing fear, uncertainty, and doubt. But the truth
is, I have some fear, uncertainty, and doubt about the current Zope
situation. I would like to see some big Zope mucky-mucks make some
definitive statements as to the future direction of the Zope
Corporation, the Zope code, and the Zope community, so that I have more
than just rumors to go on. |
