Cable and Wireless

Cable and Wireless keeps turning up in unexpected places. First, a couple of years ago, Sandpiper Networks merged with Digital Island . Later, Cable and Wireless bought Digital Island.

For much of last week, C&W has been showing up in the top 40 at Daypop, so I went to check it out, since I have friends that work there. It turns out that C&W's recent purchase of Exodus Communications led to daypop temporarily attributing undeserved importance to self-referential ads ("tripod powered by C&W") on some of Exodus' tripod pages.

Trivia note: The name "Cable & Wireless" has nothing to with Cable TV, nor with Wireless Telephone or Internet connections. The company is over 130 years old. "Cable" refers to transatlantic cables; "Wireless" refers to Marconi's circa-1900 "Wireless Telegraph", aka r/a/d/i/o. Not "Radio UserLand". See the C&W History page for the rest of the details.
