Winston

Had to have our venerable cat Winston put to sleep this morning. 17 years old. Deb wasn't a cat person until the very young Winston chose her. She says it's the only thing she's ever acquired at a Mary Kay party. Thank you, Mary Kay. Thank you, Winston.

biopython

Bioinformatics. Study gene sequences, protein sequences, 3D protein folding properties, etc using nimble scripting languages instead of C. Python, Java, Ruby, Pfthlbltherl each have a "bio-"-prefixed version, for parsing the outputs from various databases of gene sequences, protein sequences, etc., and doing useful things with them.

Open Bio Hackathons. Older one in Phoenix. Very recent one was in South Africa. Made it into slashdot Blogged by Nathan Torkington at http://www.technophage.com. The idea is to make sure that the different languages' software can interoperate. And, to the extent that language bigotry permits, avoid reinventing wheels.
