Python, Java, Ruby, Pfthlbltherl each have a "bio-"-prefixed version, for parsing the outputs from various databases of gene sequences, protein sequences, etc., and doing useful things with them.

The idea is to make sure that the different languages' software can interoperate. And, to the extent that language bigotry permits, avoid reinventing wheels.
