Denver November 2004 Election
The Denver Post is taking the lead in trying to explain the sheer volume of initiatives Denver voters may see on the ballot this fall [May 30, 2004, "Signing season: Ballot petitions circulate"].
Peter Blake looks at Bob Schaffer and the issues around taxes in his column in yesterday's Rocky Mountain News [May 29, 2004, Blake: Schaffer tries to get some traction with tax issues"]. From the opinion piece, "When you agree with your fellow conservative on most issues, you have to stress whatever advantages you think you have. Schaffer maintained Republicans should vote for him because he's 'the only proven tax-cutter.'"
In the same column Blake writes, "Denver Republicans never give up hope despite having decades of odds and history against them. On Thursday they chose financial consultant Roland Chicas as their candidate to challenge Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in the 1st Congressional District this fall. Chicas won 73 percent of the delegate vote at the Republican 1st Congressional District Assembly, keeping challengers Mel Hilgenberg and Randy Swann off the primary ballot. Chicas ran for the same job two years ago, but was shut out at the assembly by carpetbagging state Sen. Ken Chlouber, who was led to slaughter that November."
Here's an article about Bob Schaffer and immigration from the Rocky Mountain News [May 29, 2004, "Schaffer hiccups on worker visa vote"]. From the article, "'However,' he (Schaffer) added, 'we have a huge obligation as Americans and Coloradans to be compassionate.' As a standing-room-only crowd of about 350 fell silent, Schaffer wondered aloud what he would do if he were trying to raise five children in a Central American country. Then, he said he'd do whatever he could to get to this country. Coors didn't address the visa issue during the debate. While he supports a guest-worker program, he hasn't taken a stand on the visas, spokeswoman Cinamon Watson said Friday."
Mitch Morrisey has two TV ads up on his website. I couldn't determine what formats the campaign is using but the ads worked on my Mac in Quicktime. Thanks for showing an inclusive attitude to computer users that have Macs.
