McCain vs. Clinton?
Political Wire: "Time says that if the 2008 presidential campaign were held today, it would be Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) against Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). However, 'no one would know better than McCain and Clinton how many uncertainties and treacheries lie ahead and how important it is to keep their own options open as long as they can.'"

Referendums C and D
Douglas Bruce is threatening a lawsuit if Referendum C passes, according to the Cortez Journal. They write, "Bruce said supporters of Referendum C made a mistake by asking voters to change state laws rather than the state Constitution, because a law cannot change provisions of the Constitution. The problem, he said, is that Referendum C proposes to change a provision of the Constitution locking in the amount of money lawmakers can spend without voter approval. Bruce said Owens has misrepresented the referred measure on the ballot, saying he is using TABOR to fix the state[base ']s budget problems. Bruce said the provisions sought by Owens and other supporters are not allowed under TABOR."

The Rocky Mountain News asks So what will Ref C really cost? [August 20, 2005]. They write, "So how much will a family of four give up if Ref C passes? We suggest Coloradans forget the various claims, examine the Blue Book when it arrives and do a back-of-the-envelope calculation. Choose the appropriate income category for the sales tax refund and then review the list of other refunds to see how many they might qualify for. That will give them a better idea of their likely refund absent Ref C."

Bob Ewegen takes on the divisions amongst Republicans in his column in yesterday's Denver Post [August 20, 2005, "Real World GOP strikes back"]. He writes, "There are two Republican Parties in Colorado, and they are at war with each other. The largest group, Real World Republicans, is led by Gov. Bill Owens, state Sen. Norma Anderson and business leaders like Joe Blake and Bruce Benson. Real World Republicans believe in limited government and a strong economy. Their roots can be traced to Henry Clay, whose American system promoted 'internal improvements' like highways and the Erie Canal to fuel economic growth...The second, much smaller group is the Think Tank Republicans. They read 'Atlas Shrugged' in college and never got over it. While Real Republicans want limited government, Think Tank Republicans dream of no gummint at all."

World Water Week
A picture named leechpoolsmall.jpg

Today is the start of World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. From the website, "The World Water Week in Stockholm, August 21-27, 2005, is the leading annual global meeting place for the world's diverse water community. The World Water Week includes the Stockholm Water Symposium, topical plenary sessions and panel debates, scientific workshops, independently organised seminars and side events, exhibitions and festive prize ceremonies."

Coyote Gulch was shocked to learn that a child dies every 30 seconds somewhere in the world due to inadequate access to clean water.

Don't forget the fourth lecture in the series Wringing Water from the Rocks Tuesday night. The subject is Water Supply Challenges & Solutions with Steve Boand, Douglas County Commissioner and Ed Means, a water consultant formerly of the California Metro Water District.

Aurora is looking for volunteers for their Xeriscape garden.
