Katrina
Friends have written to tell me that the Salvation Army has been more effective than the American Red Cross in helping the victims of Katrina. Send them some dough also.
MSNBC's Looking for website, "Are you trying to find loved ones who were displaced by the destruction of Hurricane Katrina? Let us know who you're looking for and leave instructions or a message for them. Fill out the form below with information on the people you are seeking . It will show up in the 'Looking For' lists."

Roberts for Chief Justice?
TalkLeft is reporting that President Bush has formally nominated John Roberts to be appointed Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
More on Robert's nomination as Chief Justice from The Moderate Voice. They write, "Now the question is going to become: Roberts was acceptable to conservatives as a Supreme Court nominee and his appointment as Chief Justice means conservatives will see the conservative Rehnquist replaced by another consersvative. Does this mean now that Bush has given them someone they feel good about that he can appoint his friend and close associate Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales to the court?"

Isgar for Lieutenant Governor?
State Senator Jim Isgar is interested in running for Lieutenant Governor, according to the Cortez Journal. From the article, "In Colorado the lieutenant governor is appointed. Candidates for governor are required to announced their choice for the office a few weeks prior to election day. Isgar said his position as assistant Senate majority leader and as the lone rural Democrat in the Senate might be a boost to the ticket. His credentials could give a Denver area or Front Range governor candidate a bounce among Western Slope and southwestern voters. 'I think I've had an impact as the only rural Democrat, providing a voice for agriculture, natural resources and water,' Isgar said."

Referendums C and D
The Rocky Mountain News editorial staff is urging voters to pass Referendum D on the fall ballot [September 4, 2005, "Don't overlook 'D'"]. From the article, "Ref D would permit the state to borrow up to $2.1 billion - or whatever it can get so long as repayment costs don't exceed $3.225 billion - for roads and bridges, school repairs and bailing out the police and fire pension plan."
Here's an opinion piece from former House majority leader Dick Armey in opposition to Referendum C from the Denver Post [September 4, 2005, "Referendum C: Democracy in action"]. He writes, "To increase taxes, supporters of Referendum C will need to convince the people that the government's need for hard-earned dollars is greater than their own. In a state where more than 70 percent of the people like the safety of the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, that is going to be a very difficult task."
