DeLay PAC Indicted
The Central Texas Citizen is reporting that Congressman DeLay's PAC has been indicted by a grand jury in Texas. Mr. Rivera writes, "Although the TRMPAC was formed by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay(R-Tx), the congressman from Sugarland currently does not have any charges against him. The TRMPAC has one charge against, that being for accepting a $100,000 contribution from the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care."

Glenn Reynolds has a good list of lessons learned from the Katrina disaster. Thanks to the Moderate Voice for the link.

#1 on his list is, "Don't build your City below sea level." Yesterday an evacuee in Denver said, "A mile above sea level, I feel safer already." Welcome to the Mile High City.

The editor of the North Denver News, Guerin Green, posted this message in the comments here: "We need volunteers here in North Denver! On Saturday, September 10 from 10-2 we are raising money, clothes, health items for Katrina victim at 32nd and Osceola. Four bands, auction items from 120 business, kids activities, pony rides and more! And we need your help. volunteer@northdenvernews.com"

Here's a list of front range events being held for Katrina relief from SoapBlox Colorado.

Much of the blogosphere is abuzz with timelines for the Katrina disaster. Here's one from Josh Marshall. Thanks to Ed Cone for the link.

The Louisiana NAACP is requesting donations of laptop computers. Fedex them to Louisiana NAACP, 1755 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.

Doc Searls: "I'm an optimist. That's my nature. In spite of strong evidence to the contrary, I place my bets on the better qualities of human nature. I tell myself I do that because those qualities are more highly leveraged, especially where constructive work is required, than our worse qualities. But maybe I bet that way because that's how I am. Most of what I've written so far about Katrina, like the stuff I wrote on and after 9/11/2001, at least tries to look forward, to find common ground, to float ideas that might make some kind of constructive sense."

Referendum C
The Denver Post editorial staff is picking apart Dick Armey's arguments that they published on Monday [September 7, 2005, "Fuzzy math on Referendum C"]. They write, "The Post published Armey's latest anti-tax ruminations on Monday in the belief that even out-of-state lobbyists are entitled to comment on events in Colorado. He offers a tantalizing vision of small government, but a close look reveals that to carry his point, Armey errs on every important fact about our state finances...Today, Colorado's income tax rate is 4.63 percent and its state sales tax is 2.9 percent. If C and D both pass, the income tax will still be 4.63 percent and the sales tax 2.9 percent. How do you increase revenue without raising taxes? The same way they do it in Texas. The economic pie is growing as we recover from the 2001-02 recession."

State Colleges around the state have been granted Enterprise Status under TABOR to get them off the general fund books and hopefully keep them in business. Westword looks at the opportunities that are opening up.

Green Mountain Water for Douglas County?
A picture named irrigationsmall.jpg

The idea of pumping water from Green Mountain Reservoir back upstream to Dillon Reservoir to be used by Douglas County has been resurrected 15 years after first being proposed, according to the Denver Post [September 8, 2005, "Long route for water solution"]. From the article, "Originally built to replace water shipped to the Front Range by the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, Green Mountain Reservoir is a vital part of Colorado's water infrastructure. It allows thousands of users from Granby to Grand Junction to divert water, even when more-senior users have priority. In 2003, the State Water Supply Initiative tapped the Green Mountain pumpback as a potential solution to the Front Range's water crunch. The study predicted that the statewide demand for water will exceed supply by about 20 percent in 2030."
