2003 Denver Mayoral Election

According to the Rocky Mountain News, Don Mares vowed to replace police chief Gerry Whitman when elected and I'm pretty sure it was no April Fool's joke. Mares made the announcement prior to his endorsement interview with the police union. I guess he figured he was not in the running for their endorsement. There is widespread mistrust of the police department amongst the voters especially in light of the spy files and the more recent moonlighting revelations.

John Hickenlooper revealed his economic plan yesterday. He announced several proposals including a new cabinet level development economic development administrator. I hope your appointment won't require a charter change John, that might take your whole first term to accomplish.

Mares is also in the news for his lawsuit over some Winter Park records. Mares sued to get the records released and lost the case but it's now being appealed. The Winter Park deal has been controversial. Mayor Webb ignored the sell recommendation of a committee that he appointed.
