I am attending the 2002 Ad Astra Science Fiction and Fantasy convention in Toronto, Ontario this weekend.
The Writer Guests of Honor at the convention are Guy Gavriel Kay who signed my copy of A Song for Arbonne and Julie E. Czerneda who signed a newly purchased copy of In the Company of Others with which I will try out her work. Interestly, her bio stated she started writing SF after attending a prior Ad Astra convention so who knows what can happen.
Other writers are Hal Clement who talked about problems facing writers who set their stories in well-known star systems. His slides were fairly prehistoric, drawn by hand with all the examples from Star Trek TOS. Of course orbital dynamics hasn't changed recently.
Robert J. Sawyer read from his new novel, Hominids. Again set in Canada, this time it's a cross alternative universe adventure with humans and Neanderthals. It is the first book in a trilogy. Since it is being serialized in Analog Rob discussed some of the business decisions behind that.
Jason Taniguchi, presented JASON TANIGUCHI'S ONE-MAN SHOW: "LORD OF THE RINGS: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: THE CHEAPER VERSION". Running at nearly one hour it recapped the feature film, turning it into both a comedy and adventure. Excellent.
