"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

It's not like there have never been terrorists before. Jewish terrorists were killing Romans in Jerusalem 2k years ago. Most every European country had homegrown terrorists in the 70s.

It's a known problem. People who claim they don't understand why terrorists would do such a thing, should either figure it out, or shut up (if they already know and are just making nationalist/tribalist noise).

How do you beat terrorists? In the U. S., we did it with genocide, but that's no longer an option, even for a country like Israel.

There are two remaining approaches. You can do exactly what the terrorists want you to do. This is the Sharon/Bush plan: gladly kill anyone in the general vicinity of a terrorist. It guarantees the next generation of terrorists. As long as you keep it up, the terrorists don't even *have* to do anything.

Or you can go for justice. You do the right thing, live free and brave, put the criminals in jail, and make it so the population -- Palestinians, Arabs/Muslims in general, etc. -- are OK with what you're doing, and reject the terrorists. The population doesn't *really* want to be cannon-fodder for terrorists' powertrips.

Bob Lewis: "In mass media, the entertainment or information isn't product -- it's bait. The audience is the product, of which advertisers are both customer and consumer."
