"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

The Taliban fish have swum away [guardian.co.uk]. Twice, now, the army has let the bad guys get away. It's almost like they don't really want to catch the Bin Laden gang. Meanwhile the army calls it a success. Well, it's success if you wanted the bad guys to get away.

Meanwhile, the army excludes the press. Soldiers threaten to shoot reporters. Soldiers refuse to aid wounded reporters in getting back to adequate medical care. Obviously the army doesn't want the press to reveal what is actually going on.

Now, I presume individual soldiers are brave and honorable, and doing their best to serve our country. But that doesn't mean the chain of command is making the right decisions.

Something like 3,000 people died on September 11 last year. Apparently, US forces have killed far more innocent Afghan civilians than that. The reason so many non-combatants are killed, is that Rumsfeld and company would rather kill thousands of innocent civilians, than have one American soldier die.

I have a problem with that. So would the American people, if they saw it happening. That's why reporters have to be kept away. I certainly don't want American soldiers to die; I just don't want them to kill civilians.

So here's the question: how many (foreign, non-white) civilians are you willing to kill to spare the life of one American soldier.

It's impractical to kill civilians, as well as immoral. The intent of terrorism is to provoke attacks on civilians by the US. Our killing of civilians turns the civilians -- across the middle-east/arab/islamic world -- against us, just as Bin Laden planned.

Liberal bias? Of *course* there's a liberal bias. Consider the words used to describe gays, non-whites, and non-Republicans. Even back in Nixon's day, he couldn't express his true beliefs in public. Things have only gotten worse for racist homophobes (for example). You can tell they are *very* unhappy with the situation, too.
