Jasper's vet phoned me Monday with the autopsy results. Turns out Jasper had several small tumors on his kidneys and a giant tumor on his diaphram. The vet had never seen anything like it before. The tumor would explain why Jasper was hungry but yet wouldn't eat - his esophagus was pinched a tad.

The autopsy was actually a relief - I had such a strong feeling that I should put Jasper down - I could tell that he didn't feel good and I just knew inside that he was not going to get better. But I had no rational reason to back up my decision - just my gut. So when Jasper actually died in my arms I was so scared that I had done it too soon. But we make a pact with our animals to do the right thing as best we can. And I knew that Jasper didn't feel good and that something was horribly wrong.

Peter and I just returned from the funeral of the Nick Indahl - the twenty two year old son of a very good friend of ours. Funerals are difficult enough. But the funeral of a young person is beyond the pale. That being said, Nick's funeral was a wonderful celebration of his life.

It has been a totally miserable week.
