Time to get caught up on the Slat Rat Bookpile. Even though it's been an intense few months, I've still been reading like a fiend.
- I just finished Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. I read it in a day and a half and it was easily the most enjoyable book I read in 2002. Well written and the story of opera, hostages, divas, translators, and love is lyrical and pretty darn gripping. Very romantic without being mooshy.
- Prior to Bel Canto, I read (for the first time - can you believe it?) The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. What a giant of a book. It is my sixteen year old sister Songya's all time favorite book and with good reason. My god - the story and the language and the anger. It's obvious where Rap's origins came from.
- The Chess Garden by Brooks Hansen. A magical and inventive book. Very difficult to describe - characters who are game pieces but are so real. I highly recommend this book if you want a twist.
- The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. It's everthing it is advertised to be. Black black black humor and what has to be the most disfunctional family ever. Although everyone in our book club has at least one close relative that matched a character in the book.

We just lit off a ton of fireworks outside in the cold and snow. I gave my very cute sweetie a New Year's smooch!
