Charles comments on IBM's "foray back into the software biz." Actually IBM never left the software biz - their J2EE Websphere environment is quite robust and is a good enterprise level development and production environment.

What IBM's new offering is, is a foray back into office productivity software. And they've taken an interesting approach. It looks as if their "office aps" (word processing, spreadsheets, etc) will be server based. This means no software installation at each and every PC. Instead a portal approach will be utilized. That has a certain appeal to enterprises - which of course are the folks that own Websphere. If IBM's product is good (very good) and could seamlessly exchange Microsoft files, it might have a chance.

I would be very interested in taking a peek at this product. I'd love to know what a portal based word processor looks like. I've done a fair amount of portal investigation in the past and am a huge fan of J2EE. I'm intrigued by the concept. But it definitely runs the danger of putting a tutu on an elephant with the expectation of an exquisite pas de duex.

And Charles - the permalink to this entry on your blog did not work. And when are comments coming?!

Today is get-caught-up-on-all-of-my-non-profit-obligations day:
  • I neglected to mention this last week, but I was elected co-chairman of Southwestern College's Science Advisory Committee. The co-chairmanship is quite an honor - we have several illustrious members and then there's little me. I was really surprised. And I definitely want to do a good job. So - I sent out a flurry of e-mails today.
  • Government Hill Community Council stuff. We've got a big meeting next week. Major tank farm issues will be presented. My little piece of that is helping develop the Neighborhood Tank Farm Safety Awareness program. You'd be surprised at some of the stupid stuff that goes on: Fireworks off the bluff, directly over the tank farms. Using the bluff as a golf ball driving range and the tanks as targets.
  • Concert Association Marketing Committee initiatives. We are pushing hard to rebuild our Classical Music subscribership. We present amazing world class programs and we want butts in the seats. So, lots of stuff on that front.

As I sit in my study, blogging and listening to Mikhail Pletnev Live at Carnegie Hall (great CD - the Chacone is fabulous and the encores are jaw droppers), it is 42 degrees and pouring rain. I know that sounds tres ugly, but we need rain so it is a good thing.
