So, just for grins and edification, I'm reading William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Man, it is a toughie. The first section, narrated by the mentally handicaped Benjy nee Maury, changes timespace so frequently and without reference (other than a few italicized words) that I had a devil of a time keeping track of who, what, when, and where.
I finally decided I needed external help and found a very nice online summary of the book. I immediately felt better when I read the following:
Reading this section is profoundly difficult, however, because the idiot has no concept of time or place—sensory stimuli in the present bring him back to another time and place in his past, instantly and without warning (except for a change in typeface from Roman to italic).
But even with the timespace issues, I found myself getting into Benjy's rhythm - it requires a great deal of concentration. But it is doable. Fortunately, I am now past Benjy and am on to the first Quentin who appears to be preparing for his suicide.
Such a cheery book. But it is truly a masterpiece.
