Canada is getting a bit of bad press recently. All because our Prime Minister isn’t willing to give George Bush a blank endorsement to attack Iraq. So far only Great Britain has stepped up with the kind of support Americans have come to expect.
It would be my opinion that Canada has been a great neighbor to the USA, in fact I would go as far as stating that Canadians feel more like family than anything else. I would like to list just a few of the ways Canada did step up in the past year to support America’s war on Terrorism.
On September 11th of last year when thousands of Americans on flights needed a safe place to land, more often that not, Canadian airports were open to them. With that came Canadian hospitality, and support. The government came forward very quickly with many programs with aid to the American People and their government.
By the start of October Operation Apollo was launched, and what would later involve more than 3,000 Canadians in total.
At the peak of the war in Afghanistan, six Canadian ships and 1500 crew mostly supporting the US military.
The army’s first support came in the form of sending the Joint Task Force 2, the elite Canadian commando squad. The battle group of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry put 1,000 soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan. These soldiers were in harms way, and were part of combat operations.
Canada’s air force deployed it’s Polaris, and Hercules for airlifts and Auroras for long- range surveillance.
The list would not be complete with out mentioning the four soldiers of the Third Battalion Light Infantry who were killed on April 18th when a U.S. F-16 pilot mistakenly dropped a bomb on them.
This is just talking about recent military and moral support. I certainly hope George W. and the hawkish press remember all that before they start to Canuck bash.
