Those of you who have been following this list for a few months know that I've been gearing up to digitize a rather large vinyl record library. There are clearly professional tools available and even serious turntables designed for the twenty first century. I've chosen to use my twenty five year old turntable with a good cartridge and a usb link my Powerbook. The Griffin iMic is essentially $35 overkill for the project and the latest version of their free Final Vinyl utility is actually useful.

There will be quite a bit of hand editing of tracks, but I intend to do this a few LPs a weekend rather than in a huge batch. It should be fun. For what it is worth the resulting digital file will be encoded as 160kbps aac using Quicktime 6 Pro.

Speaking of collections, I have been visiting David Rumsey's map collection for a few years and am amazing at how much he has. The navigation tools (especially the java tool) leave much to be desired, but it is about content. New updates seem to occur at regular intervals. One wonders where he finds the resources to do this (his collection as well as the website)
