A lone turkey continues to terrorize Oberiln Ohio.

A lovely place to convert money into sciencey gifts is Maxilla & Mandible, LTD just North of the American Museum of Natural History. Real stuff and reproductions - the store is much better than the webpage but, for most people, this passes both the fascination and obscurity tests. Recommended!

Old scientific instruments and gadgets are often wonderful. Simply Superbgifts has a nice selection. Wander around their pages - the highlighted page has a lovely little Stirling engine and a very neat portable sundial. I've seen the engine and it is wonderful as advertised.

If we had a combination of money and space the Davis weather station would be fun. One of the local public schools has one of these and it seems to be well built and a good value for the money.

Be the first on your block to the the last on it with an amateur liquid rocket motor! I have no idea how well this works or how safe it is (I'm assuming it isn't in the spirit of real rocketry).

We have noted that rocketry progresses from model to high power to amateur to professional stages in technological complexity. What sets an amateur apart from the model and high power enthusiast is that the motors are generally homemade and - well - exciting.

Richard Nakka does serious stuff - up to L class motors. His motors look very professional - this is the sort of thing that I dreamed of in Jr High School. It is interesting to note that my first encounter with trying to solve differential equations was in an amateur rocketry book that came out a year or two after Sputnik. It was in the school library and was well worn by others who had a deep interest (although, to my knowledge, not deep enough to build anything).
